Technique Is King — but Flexibility, Mobility and Strength Help

In Jiu-Jitsu, you’ll often hear that technique beats strength. Good timing, leverage and positioning can help you control a stronger opponent without having to match their power. But that doesn’t mean physical attributes are irrelevant.

Anyone who has spent time on the mats knows that some positions feel easier when you’re mobile, that holding control takes strength, and that making good decisions becomes harder when you’re exhausted. Technique is the foundation, but your physical condition influences how well you can use it.

The hierarchy

Good technique allows you to use leverage, timing and positioning rather than relying on brute strength. It's what makes Jiu-Jitsu effective against bigger, stronger opponents.

But physical attributes still matter. Mobility helps you move efficiently, strength supports control and stability, and cardiovascular endurance keeps you sharp when fatigue sets in. These qualities don't replace technique — they help you apply it when it matters most.

What Should You Focus On?

  • Mobility: Better hip and shoulder mobility can improve your guard retention, transitions and ability to move comfortably through different positions.

  • Strength: Building basic strength helps you maintain control, manage physical pressure and support your joints through the demands of training.

  • Cardiovascular endurance: Better conditioning helps you stay composed, make smarter decisions and maintain technical precision as the rounds get harder.

  • Consistency: You don't need hours of extra training. Even 10–15 minutes of focused mobility work a few times a week can be a useful addition to your routine.

Strength and conditioning are there to support your Jiu-Jitsu, not compete with it. Build a body that moves well, stays resilient and can keep up with your technical development.

The goal isn't to become the strongest or most flexible grappler in the room. It's to make your technique work better, for longer.
