BJJ Is a Taxing Sport — Treat Recovery Seriously

Jiu Jitsu asks a lot from your body. The people still training happily at 50 aren't the toughest — they're the best at recovering.

Recovery is training

Your body doesn't get stronger during class; it gets stronger repairing afterwards. Skimp on sleep, food and rest days and you'll show up weaker, get injured more, and progress slower than someone training less than you.

The basics beat the gadgets

Before ice baths and massage guns: sleep seven to nine hours, eat enough protein, drink water, and take at least one full rest day a week. Those four cover ninety percent of recovery.

Listen to the whispers

A tweaked finger, a stiff neck, unusual fatigue — small signals ignored become big injuries. Skipping one class to recover always beats being forced to skip six weeks. Train so you can train tomorrow.
