What to Expect at Your First BJJ Class in Hong Kong
Walking into a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym for the first time is intimidating for almost everyone — and within about ten minutes, almost everyone realises it didn't need to be. Here's exactly what a first class looks like, so you can show up relaxed.
Before you arrive
Most gyms let you book a trial class with a quick message. Arrive about 15 minutes early — that gives you time to meet the coach, get changed and see the space. No experience is needed, and you won't be thrown in the deep end.
How the class runs
Every class follows the same structure: a short warm-up to get you moving, then the coach demonstrates the technique of the day step by step. You'll drill it with a partner at your own pace while coaches walk the room making corrections. From there class moves into positional practice — applying the technique from a specific position with light resistance. Beginners are paired with experienced, patient training partners.
Will I have to spar?
Classes finish with sparring rounds, but as a first-timer you simply sit and watch, or join in only if you feel ready and your coach agrees. Nobody is ever forced to spar on day one. Most people are surprised by how controlled it is — BJJ is built on technique and leverage, not aggression.
What to wear and bring
Comfortable workout clothes with no buttons, zippers or buckles are perfect — shorts or leggings and a T-shirt or rashguard. Bring a water bottle and flip-flops for walking off the mats. Most gyms have changing rooms, and you won't need your own gi for a first class.
After class
Expect to be tired, a little humbled and probably hooked — that’s the standard first-class experience. Your coach will chat with you about which classes suit your goals, whether that’s fitness, self-defense or eventually competing.
Ready to try it? Most academies offer a free trial class — in Hong Kong, Carpe Diem BJJ runs 58 classes a week across Sai Ying Pun and Quarry Bay, and you can book a free trial class on WhatsApp at +852 6183 8312.
